SPIES AND GUYS

Joe is a bumbling Private in the army of the "Republic of Jugonutzland," the bane of his Sergeant's (Murray Alper) existence. Trying to impress Lt. Morey (Angela Stevens), an officer in the Intelligence division, Joe volunteers for a mission behind enemy lines with the Sarge. The two are soon under sniper fire in a bombed out village, and Joe's ineptitude results in his capture. Also a prisoner is Lt. Morey, who had gone undercover in the enemy's camp, but she uses her wiles (and a bathing suit) to distract the firing squad and save herself and Joe.

Pretty good Besser solo outing. Reminds me of some Stooge shorts in places, particularly BOOBS IN ARMS. I think this shows why Joe, in '56, would have been thought of as Stooge material; note how much slapstick he takes in this. Now if only those Besser-era Stooges shorts had been more like this...

...speaking of Besser-era Stooges shorts, was PIES AND GUYS named after this?

Genuinely funny Besser comedy. GI Joe, his Sergeant and Joe's Intelligence Dept. girlfriend (Angela Stevens) are sent behind enemy lines to retrieve vital information. Rare 1953 backlot location shooting, and lots of quickly-paced slapstick. Emil Sitka is here too, as an enemy officer.
