Returning Merchant Marine war hero Dan Flannery (radio comedian Al Pearce) learns that his childhood hometown wants to honor him with a week-long celebration. Reluctant at first, Dan decides to go to Midburg when the townspeople raise a $10,000 award, money he can use to marry his girlfriend Mabel (Mary Treen). But before he leaves, he gets mixed up with three con artists (Jerome Cowan, Shemp Howard, Pinky Lee) and their phony horse racing routine. A fight breaks out when he catches on, and a bump on the head leaves him suffering from amnesia. The three crooks convince him that he's their gang leader, a look-alike for the "real" Flannery, and head for Midburg with Dan in a scheme to make off with the $10,000.
