Re: NEW 3 STOOGES, THE

I've only sat through one of the actual cartoons (Noisy Silent Movie), but I watch every wraparound (generally on YouTube) that I can, just to get one more look at the boys in action. The wraparounds are probably not much worse than most of the DeRita-era movies and they take a lot less time to watch! Pretty lame for the most part, although I laughed at the "window-washing" gag in WAITERS (my favorite Curly-Joe moment) and the "Curly-John" line in TELEGRAM. (I'd really like to know who "Curly-John" is!)

The cartoon parts: 1 poke The live action parts: 3 1/2 pokes. The live action sequences were great even though some of the sequences had no violence between the stooges or little. But I thought that the punchlines at the endings were hilarious! As for the cartoons, they stunk! There is absolutely no hitting between the stooges in the cartoons! But in the live action sequences there was some hitting. Overall, not a bad TV series. You can get the live-action sequences from the Three Stooges Festival 5 pack at Costco, and it was only $16.00!

It's probably just strong nostalgia for my childhood, but there are certain things about the cartoons and wraparounds that I really liked. Yes, it was crappy animation, and yes, a lot of the stories were poor, but here are some of the things I liked:

The musical compositions in both the wraparounds and the cartoons... pretty well written and performed I thought (who was/ware the composer(s)?) They also used some stock music, some of which I thought was pretty good.

Development of Joe DeRita's stooge character in the wraparounds... he would put on a scholarly air that was very amusing, and he would get aggressive with Moe and call him "Buddy Boy".

Good performances by Emil Sitka as "Mr. Hassenpfeffer" and others.

Some interesting characters in some of the better cartoons:

That Cotton Pickin' Chicken - Nutty hyper chicken on a skateboard with great hyper laugh and fantastic background percussive sound effect.

Julius(?) Dragon - A very beatnik philosopher dragon who convinced the stooges to drop arms and just be happy read poetry and sing.

Motorcycle Melvin - Amusing one-shot and he wan't even animated, he was a still!

Clarence of the Jungle - Kind of a jazz, beat Tarzan

Get Out Of Town By Sundown Brown - Recurring villain and foil.

Marty Marvelous - Tuxedo-clad developer who was highly exuberant & excitable.

(My favorite:) Badman - A sweet little boy who turns into a grown costumed villain whenever he hears the word "bad" and turns back into the innocent little boy whenever he hears the word "good". As boy he can't remember anything about being Badman, and as Badman he can't remember about being the boy. C'mon, that was a great idea, guys!

I couldn't agree with you more. The toons are lame, so are
the wrap-arounds; and Curly-Joe being the third Stooge
doesn't help either.

The Three Stooges at their absolute worst. Every potential
funny moment was thrown away in these bland and pointless
cartoon/live action skits.

Mike -
Bill Brauer only appeared in the first wraparound,
"Soldiers." That was produced for the pilot cartoon "That Little Old Bombmaker," and was written/produced/directed by Norman Maurer (and filmed in Norm's den). It was done before the series sold, a couple months before going into full production.

Moe and Norman wanted Emil to do the series, and the budget didn't allow for additional cast members on the payroll; so Brauer was not able to appear again. It was the only segment (out of 41 *) used once for the 156 cartoons; the others were recycled 4 times (a few only 3 times).

The forty segments made after the series went into production were produced by Maurer, and written & directed by Ed Bernds. In addition to Emil, the cast included:
- Animation Producer Dick Brown's wife, Margaret Kerry-Willcox (the voice and model for Tinkerbell in Disney's "Peter Pan")
- Jeffrey and Michael Maurer
- Dick and Margaret's children

(* There are 41, not 40 as often stated. "The Three Stooges Scrapbook" lists only 40, but omits the segment called "Sunken Treasure." "Scrapbook" also omits cartoon # 24 "Fowl Weather Friend.")

I like the live action sequences. They're very entertaining and they give you an idea of what Stooge shorts with DeRita as 3rd Stooge would've been like. The cartoons weren't horrible, just kinda bland. It's always funny how at the end of a lot of cartoons, the Stooges as sillhouettes run away with their arms flailing in the air and babbling unintelligible things. Overall, it's a MUST for Stooge film collecters.

The cartoons are mildly amusing, underappreciated children's fare. The live action segments show the boys' ages, but are still enjoyable. Better than their reputation.

Mike, I think I have the same set as you do, but on 4 dvd's. It also comes with a real good documentary and rare clips of the stooges right, including the bonds commercial? I have seen one cartoon recently, as well as watched one of two dvd's of the live action wrap arounds I have. Like I said on a Besser thread, Curly Joe comes off as really bland in these; like he doesn't have a personality or character. He seems to be just going through the motions. Moe looks older than he was, and he was around 70! He looks like a skeleton with a wig on. Larry comes out of this looking pretty sweet, much younger than Moe, and more animated than Curly Joe.

I've seen about 6 or 7 episodes of "The New Three Stooges" and wow, I'm surprised at how bad they were! Edward Bernds really directed the live action footage? Why did a top-rate director like Bernds sink so low? I remember reading somwhere that even he was ashamed of this poor series. The live-action wraparounds with the Stooges were weak. The writing was unfunny and the performances from the aging Stooges couldn't save it. And the cartoons themselves were just terrible. The cartoons had no-violence, hardly any slapstick, and limited animation that's sort of "Rocky and Bullwinkle" like. That's what happens when you direct the Stooges to just children. Less violence, less slapstick, and less laughs.
