Character actor who achieved his greatest recognition as a humanitarian. Founded the Motion Picture Relief Fund, which financed the building of The Motion Picture Home & Hospital (Larry Fine's home 1970 - 1975). The special, annual Academy Award, "The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award," is in his honor.
