Hatchet-faced character actor who specialized in mean-spirited authority figures... sheriffs, principals, landlords, and bosses. Worked constantly in the 1930s at several studios like MGM, Warners, Hal Roach. Immediately recognizable as the "Our Gang" headmaster in SHRIMPS FOR A DAY (1934), Sheriff Prettywillie in W. C. Fields' THE OLD FASHIONED WAY (1934), Charley Chase's boss in ON THE WRONG TREK (1936), and the mean Board of Education chairman in the MGM "Our Gang" one-reeler COME BACK MISS PHIPPS (1941).
